How to Wear: Colour Blocking

Ok so we’ve all seen the photo of the Gucci model in the tangerine jacket with the green trousers and gone...I don’t think this is the trend for me. This Spring Summer is one of the hardest catwalks to emulate, we all know bright white is impractical and clashing block colour looks terrifying. All you need is a little trip down memory lane back to art class, taking a look at the colour wheel. There are six main colour ways:

These sound confusing and look like some kind of mathematic equation but it’s really very simple. When trying to colour block stick to one of these basic colour ways and the eye will naturally be attracted to the combination. If you’ve ever wondered why some designer prints look incredible when high street ones lack in comparison, it’s because they’ve taken the time to try out thousands of different colour ways to find the perfect matches.

Speaking of which, one of the easiest ways to cheat at colour blocking this season is to buy a patterned piece of clothing and pick out two or three main colours to accessorize with. Although not strictly accurate it tones down an outfit and makes it more day friendly. Remember that the look is about clashing, not matching, so try and contrast things, for example a bright pink corsage on a turquoise bag. There will always be a sense of trial and error about this and one of the highlights of the trend is that once you have the colour formations right, there is no wrong.
